 Course Details 

In this online art experience, students will explore the distinctive art movements, artistic traditions, and master artists that have shaped the history of Western art. Through careful observation and guided study, students will examine how each month’s featured artist used color, composition, value, light, form, and technique to communicate ideas and create meaningful works of art.

Rather than simply copying a famous artwork, students will learn to observe, understand, and apply the principles used by the masters. After studying the featured artist and historical movement, students will use these principles as inspiration for creating their own original compositions.

Through thoughtful instruction and demonstration, students will also develop the art of visual storytelling, learning how artists use imagery, color, composition, symbolism, and technique to communicate emotions, ideas, and stories.

Oil pastels are the primary medium for this creative exploration course. Students will receive hands-on instruction in fundamental and increasingly advanced pastel techniques while developing careful observation, craftsmanship, artistic judgment, and individual expression.

Learning Objectives

Each month, students will:

• Develop a meaningful understanding of the featured master artist, including the artist’s life, influences, and important works.

• Explore the historical art movement and artistic traditions that influenced the artist’s work.

• Learn to recognize the defining characteristics of major artistic styles and movements.

• Carefully observe and analyze how master artists used color, value, composition, light, form, texture, and visual emphasis.

• Practice specific oil pastel techniques inspired by the featured artist’s methods and visual style.

• Strengthen observational skills by studying masterworks closely and intentionally.

• Learn how artists use visual storytelling to communicate ideas, emotions, narratives, and meaning.

• Apply principles learned from the masters to the creation of an original composition, rather than simply reproducing an existing work.

• Develop greater craftsmanship, patience, attention to detail, and confidence in artistic decision-making.

• Build an understanding of how artists and artistic movements are connected across the broader history of art.

By the end of the course, students will have developed not only stronger technical skills with oil pastels, but also a deeper appreciation for art history, artistic tradition, and the enduring principles of great art.
