Level: Foundations I-II
Course Details
Celebrate the season with a beautiful winter-inspired cake decorating experience! In this hands-on class, students will create an elegant light-blue holiday cake featuring poinsettias, winter greenery, snowflakes, decorative piping, and festive accents. Students will learn foundational cake decorating techniques including frosting application and smoothing, piping bag control, creating dimensional flowers and leaves, arranging decorative elements, and adding fine details for a polished finish. The project will also introduce principles of color harmony, balance, texture, composition, and craftsmanship, allowing students to combine practical culinary skills with artistic design. Each student will leave with new decorating skills and a beautifully finished holiday cake to take home.

Cake Preparation – Understanding proper cake preparation and surface preparation for decorating.

Frosting Techniques – Learning appropriate frosting consistency, application, smoothing, and texturing methods.

Crumb Coating – Applying a foundational layer to prepare a cake for professional finishing.

Piping Techniques – Developing control with piping bags and decorating tips to create borders, rosettes, stars, lettering, and other decorative elements.

Gumpaste Sculpting- Students learn to sculpt flowers from gumpaste and fondant.

Color Theory – Applying principles of color mixing, harmony, contrast, and selection to cake design.

Design & Composition – Using balance, proportion, pattern, emphasis, and visual organization to develop an intentional design.

Tool Knowledge – Learning the proper use of spatulas, scrapers, turntables, piping tips, and other decorating equipment.

Planning & Problem-Solving – Developing a design plan, sequencing steps, adapting techniques, and resolving creative challenges.

Food Safety & Sanitation – Practicing appropriate food handling, workspace organization, cleanliness, and kitchen safety.

Time Management – Learning to organize materials and complete a multi-step project within a designated timeframe.

Craftsmanship – Developing patience, attention to detail, perseverance, and pride in producing a carefully completed final product.
No previous cake decorating experience is required.
ALL MATERIALS ARE PROVIDED.
CAKE BOX PROVIDED.
Grades: 4th-12th (Level: Foundations I-II; students with no experience and those with experience are welcome)
